Equation Editor Integration Technologies

There are two technologies that are normally used to integrate Equation Editor with your application, OLE and EGO:

OLE

OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) is a technology invented by Microsoft and promoted by them as a cross-platform solution for placing objects in documents.

Implementing OLE is almost a necessity for Windows developers. On the Mac, however, only MathType, PageMaker, and Microsoft products support OLE. This may change in the future. Any Mac developer that has not already implemented OLE and does not plan to implement their application on MS Windows would do well to look into EGO (Edit Graphic Object) as an easy-to-implement alternative to OLE.

EGO

EGO (Edit Graphic Object) is an inter-application protocol based on Apple Events.

An application that supports EGO will allow users to double-click on equations and other EGO objects to edit them using the editing application in which they were created. Many major Mac applications already support EGO (MathType, Nisus Writer, FullWrite, and WordPerfect, to name a few).

Adding EGO support to your application is much easier than adding OLE support and provides most of OLE's functionality. Contact us if you are interested in finding out more about EGO technology.
