Copy and Paste from MathType to Apple iWork produces oversized images

The information in this document applies to:

  • MathType 6.x (Macintosh)
  • Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

When copying and pasting MathType equations the resulting equation is a very large TIFF image. Once pasted, equations are no longer editable with MathType.

Apple has deprecated support for the PICT format. With Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6), when an application such as MathType copies a PICT image to the clipboard, the operating system will add the TIFF image to the clipboard as well, and in the majority of cases, the TIFF format will be pasted into a receiving application. This is necessary to support interoperability between Snow Leopard applications that do not have PICT support with applications that still generate PICTs for compatibility with older versions of Mac OS.  However, such images consume an inordinate amount of system resources, and are no longer editable.

This problem has been corrected in MathType 6.7 for the Macintosh, although pasted equations are not editable. To upgrade to the new version of MathType for Mac please visit our online store at
