MathType will not launch in a Mac Guest account

The information in this document applies to:

  • MathType 6.7 and later for Mac
  • macOS 10.12 and later

Issue

When you're logged in on a Mac as a Guest, when you try to launch MathType, you see this error:

Error when launching MathType

If you follow the path identified in the error dialog and read MathType6.log, it will tell you that you need at least one Symbol font and one Extra font.

Reason

MathType uses its own version of the fonts Symbol and MT Extra. There is a way to configure your Mac such that the MathType fonts are in the OS System Fonts folder, but this is not something we recommend.

Solution

Do not run MathType as a Guest user on a Mac. If you need the capability for others to use MathType on your computer, we recommend creating a new User (in System Preferences/Users & Groups). Assign this new User to a Standard or a Managed account, and he or she will be able to use MathType after logging in. After you create the account, it's a good idea to log in to it yourself once. That way you can finish the initial cleanup items, and set it up the way you want.

We hope this has been helpful. As always, please let us know if you have questions about this, or if you have additional techniques that work. We'd love to hear from you.
