"MathType Setup can't personalize x:\install.exe" Error Message when Installing MathType 3.1

If you see the above error message when installing MathType 3.1 for Windows, this notice will help you. The problem is caused by leaving the Organization field on the personalization screen blank when the installation is first run.

If you have not yet installed MathType 3.1 the first time

If you have not yet installed MathType 3.1, you can avoid the problem by typing something into the Organization field. If you want nothing to be displayed in this field, you may type a space into the field to avoid any problems with future installations of MathType.

Note: This procedure will not work if you are already seeing the “MathType Setup can’t personalize x:\Install.exe.” error. Please see section below.

If you are currently seeing the error

If you have already installed MathType and you are experiencing the “MathType Setup can’t personalize x:\Install.exe.” error, an updated file is available that corrects the problem. If you have access to the Internet, you can download the update file.

Installing the upgrade

If you have downloaded the MT31-31A.EXE file from the Internet, here are the following steps that you will need to follow from within File Manager or Explorer:

1. Place the MT31-31A.EXE into a temp directory.
2. Run the MT31-31A.EXE file by double-clicking on it. This will extract two files: mtsetup.e$e and readme.wri to the current directory.
3. Double click on the readme.wri file. This will guide you through the remaining portion of the update procedure.
