"Illegal Operation (Invalid page fault)" Error Message in Microsoft Equation 3.0

The information in this document applies to:

Microsoft Equation 3.0 (Win)

Microsoft Word 97 (Win)

After opening Microsoft Equation Editor 3.0, upon their first keystroke to enter a character, some users receive an error message. Clicking on details reveals the following:

The problem is caused by a failure in the Microsoft Office installer to set the default fonts used by Microsoft Equation 3.0. Without having default fonts set for Microsoft Equation 3.0, when you try to create mathematical expressions, the font from which characters should be drawn is undefined, causing the "Illegal Operation (Invalid Page Fault)" error message.

Microsoft has addressed this issue directly on their website. Please read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article on this subject.
