Microsoft Works 4.x Displays Equations from MathType 3.5 and Earlier

Issue
I've created an equation with MathType. It looks fine in the MathType
window, but once I place it into Microsoft Works, it resizes to the size of a 1
inch by 1 inch box. No matter how long or short, wide or narrow the
equation in MathType is, Works stretches or shrinks the expression!
Reason
The problem has to do with how MS Works deals with OLE (Object Linking and
Embedding) objects. OLE allows two completely separate programs like
MathType and Works to interact. MathType 3.5a and earlier used OLE 1 and
as a result were subject to this bug in MS Works. Design Science has
already reported this issue to Microsoft. We do not, however, know when or
if Microsoft plans to remedy this issue.
Solution
Equations created with version 4.0 (or later) of MathType are OLE 2 compliant. Because Works can use OLE 2,
this problem does not affect expressions created with MathType 4.0. If you
are using MathType 3.5b or earlier, it is recommended that you upgrade to
the newest version of MathType to circumvent this problem in MS Works. If
you would like to upgrade, or have questions about pricing, you can do so
on-line by visiting our on-line ordering
page or you can contact our sales department at the phone number listed
on our "Contact Us" page.
