Using Equation Editor 1.x/2.x with Adobe Type Manager (ATM) 2.0 and Windows 3.1

The information in this document applies to:

Microsoft Equation 1.0 (Win)
Microsoft Equation 2.0 (Win)

Windows 3.1
Adobe Type Manager 2.0 (Win)

Equation Editor 1.0 and 2.0 can be used with dot-matrix, HP DeskJet, and certain other printers with the use of Adobe Type Manager (ATM), a font manager that can scale Type 1 PostScript fonts for various printers and for the screen. Any printer that ATM supports can be used with Equation Editor as long as Equation Editor's PostScript fonts have been installed properly into Windows and into ATM. If you already have a Postscript printer on your system and it was installed before Equation Editor was installed, skip the next section: "Installing Equation Editor PostScript fonts into Windows".

Installing Equation Editor PostScript fonts into Windows

In order for Equation Editor PostScript fonts to be installed into Windows, a PostScript printer must be present in the Installed Printers list in the Control Panel, regardless of whether you have the physical printer or not.

  1. Find and double-click on the "Control Panel" icon. Then double-click on the "Printers" icon.
  2. Click on the "Add Printer > >" button and then highlight the "Apple LaserWriter [PostScript Printer]". Click on the "Install..." button and follow the instructions for inserting a Windows Setup Disk.
  3. Now reinstall Equation Editor (Custom Installation/Tools/Equation Editor in the Word Setup program). This will install the PostScript fonts.

Installing Equation Editor PostScript fonts into ATM

  1. Find and double-click on the ATM icon. Make sure ATM is set to "ON" and that the "Use Pre-built or Resident Fonts" choice is not checked. Click on the "Add..." button.
  2. Under the "Directories:" list select the \WINDOWS\MSAPPS\EQUATION directory so that it shows as the "Source Directory:" at the top of the window. See the ATM manual if you need help moving around the directories.
  3. Equation Editor supplies four PostScript fonts; these are "Fences", "MT Extra", "MT Symbol", and "MT Symbol, ITALIC". Find them in the "Available Fonts:" list and click once on "Fences". Then hold down the control (CTRL) key and click once on the three remaining MathType fonts. Scroll down the list if necessary, making sure all four fonts are now highlighted. Click once on the "Add" button; the fonts will now be installed into ATM.
  4. Click on the "Exit" button. You will now have to exit back to DOS and restart Windows.

If you actually have a PostScript printer or are planning to get one, then please be aware of that when fonts are added to versions of ATM below 2.0, instructions are mistakenly removed from the Windows WIN.INI file that download fonts to PostScript printers. This bug was fixed with the 2.0 release. If you have an earlier version you must re-install any downloadable PostScript printer fonts that you installed into ATM in order to rebuild the WIN.INI. This is done for Equation Editor fonts by simply reinstalling it after adding its fonts to ATM.
