"An error occurred starting MathType's Commands for Word. Please re-install MathType." error message in Microsoft Word.

Issue:

The following error message is displayed when starting Microsoft Word: "An error occurred starting MathType's Commands for Word. Please re-install MathType."

This issue is also accompanied with not being able to paste within a document and/or print.

Reason:

Microsoft Word will often disable add-ins following an unexpected shut down of Word. 'MathType Commands for Word' is the MathType add-in for Word which loads automatically when Word launches. If the add-in is disabled, the error message is displayed.

Solution:

Office 2010:

1. Click the File tab, click Options.
2. Select Disabled Items from the Manage drop-down menu and click Go.
3. If any of the following items are listed, select them and click Enable.
   • MathType Commands x for Word.dotm
   • WordCmds.dot
4. Restart Word.

Office 2007:

1. Click the Microsoft Office Button, click Word Options, and then click Add-ins.
2. Select Disabled Items from the Manage drop-down menu and click Go.
3. If any of the following items are listed, select them and click Enable.
   • MathType Commands x for Word.dotm
   • WordCmds.dot
4. Restart Word.

Office 2000-2003:

1. On the Help menu, click About Microsoft Word, and then click Disabled Items.
2. If any of the following items are listed, select them and click Enable.
   • MathType Commands x for Word.dot
   • WordCmds.dot
3. Restart Word.

Note: Enabling the MathType add-in is often followed by: "The document "Filename" caused a serious error the last time it was opened. Would you like to continue opening it?". Click Yes to finish enabling the add-in.
